Dr. Peter M.A. Toivonen
Dr. Peter M.A. Toivonen is a Postharvest Physiologist working at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Science and Technology Branch at the Summerland Research and Development Centre in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. He is a member of the editorial board for Postharvest Biology and Technology and the newly-elected vice-chair of the Division Postharvest and Quality Assurance (DPHQ) in the International Society for Horticultural Science. Dr. Toivonen has focused his recent research on the topics of internal quality at harvest and quality changes occurring during storage for apples and sweet cherries destined primarily for fresh markets. He is currently working on characterizing internal quality attributes of new apple and cherry cultivars using non-destructive instrumentation based on visible-near infrared spectroscopy. Dr. Toivonen is also working at assessing the impact of maturity, growing season weather patterns and production practices such as irrigation strategies and nitrogen nutrition on the at harvest internal quality in apples and cherries and their effects on consequent changes during storage or shipping.
