Dr. Lopez graduated from the Veterinary College, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and holds MSc and PhD degrees in veterinary bacteriology, from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He has been Professor and Chairman of the Department of Bacteriology, Veterinary College, UNAM; Head of Bacteriology, Animal Pathology Laboratory, Agriculture Canada, Sackville, New Brunswick; Head, Microbial Food Safety Laboratory, Centre for Animal and Plant Health, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Head of Bacteriology and International Project Manager, National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease, Winnipeg; Chair of the Animal Care Committee, Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, Winnipeg; and General Coordinator of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) Harmonization of Diagnostic Tests Program, in the North American Animal Health Laboratory Network. His research activities have included pathogenic mechanisms of bovine and avian septicemic Escherichia coli, Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis and Burkholderia mallei, microbial food safety in the swine industry and technology development for the diagnosis of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and equine glanders. He is currently the National Manager of Animal Health Research and Partnerships, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Government of Canada, and the Canadian Lead Representative in the Animal Health Task Force of PROCINORTE.
